Reference — human hair wigs, in depth
The Goldylost guide to human hair wigs
A definitive plain-language reference to lace wigs, hand-tied caps, Remy hair, density, the collections we make, and what makes a Goldylost wig disappear into a daily routine.
In one paragraph
A human hair wig is a full hair piece made from real, ethically sourced human hair, hand-tied onto a breathable cap and held in place without glue. Goldylost makes wigs in three distinct families — classic lace wigs, pony wigs, and hat top wigs — plus occasional virgin hair limited collections. Every Goldylost wig uses 100% Remy human hair, hand-tied lace fronts, and a glueless cap engineered to disappear into a daily routine.

Goldylost exists because there was no honest, plain-language place to learn about premium wigs when our founder Clementine first needed one. The category is dense with jargon, the price range is real, and most of the websites she landed on were either trying to sell her something in the next thirty seconds or were so technical they made her feel less qualified to choose, not more. This guide is the page we wished had existed.
It is organized as twelve numbered sections, intended to be read in order on a first pass, or used as a lookup afterwards. Wherever a topic is covered in more depth elsewhere on the site, you’ll find an in-line link to that article.
01What is a wig
A wig, in the modern sense, is a complete piece of hair that covers your entire head and is held in place by an adjustable cap. It is distinct from a topper, which clips onto your existing hair to cover thinning at the crown; from a fall, which sits at the back and adds length to your own front; and from extensions, which are bonded or clipped into the hair you already have. A wig replaces, fully, what is growing — or not growing — underneath.
Wigs have existed in some form for several thousand years, from the linen and human-hair pieces worn in ancient Egypt to the powdered constructions of eighteenth-century Europe. What we mean by “wig” today, however, is a much more refined object: a hand-finished cap, a hand-tied hairline of fine Swiss lace, and a hair source chosen specifically to behave like the hair of the woman who will wear it. The wig of the past was a costume. The wig today is, when made well, the opposite — an object designed to be unnoticed.
Goldylost makes only that kind of wig.
02Human hair vs synthetic
The single biggest divide in the wig market is between human hair pieces and synthetic pieces. Both have their place. Synthetic wigs hold their style without effort, are inexpensive enough to own several, and are the right answer for costume use, short-term wear, or moments in life when daily styling is not realistic — many women in active chemotherapy, for example, prefer a synthetic piece for exactly this reason.
Human hair, however, is the right answer almost everywhere else. The realism is unmatched: a well-made human hair piece moves, catches the light, and grows out of the lace front in the way that a synthetic piece never quite manages. The lifespan is multiples longer with regular care — one to three years compared with four to six months for an everyday synthetic. The styling possibilities are unlimited. A human hair wig can be curled, straightened, blow-dried, toned darker, brought into a fringe, and gradually shaped to flatter the face beneath it. A synthetic wig cannot.
The cost equation also reverses over time. A premium human hair piece costs more up front but typically costs less per year of wear than buying three or four synthetic pieces to cover the same period. We work only with human hair because it is what we would put on our own heads.
03Remy hair, and why it matters
Within the human hair category, there is a further, quieter distinction that almost no website explains properly: Remy versus non-Remy. The difference comes down to one technical detail of how the hair was originally gathered, and it determines almost everything about how the piece will behave on your head.
Remy hair is collected with all of the cuticles — the microscopic outer scales on each strand — running in the same direction from root to tip. This sounds like a small detail. In practice, it is the difference between hair that tangles within a week and hair that brushes out cleanly months later. Aligned cuticles mean strands slide past each other rather than catching, the way they do on your own scalp. The hair looks softer, behaves more naturally, and lasts much longer.
Non-Remy hair is the cheaper alternative, gathered from multiple sources with cuticles running in every direction. To stop it from instantly tangling, manufacturers strip the cuticle entirely through an acid bath, then coat the bare cortex in silicone to restore some shine. The silicone wears off in the first few washes, and what is left underneath is hair without its protective layer. It looks beautiful in the box. It rarely looks beautiful at the three-month mark.
Every Goldylost wig and topper is made from 100% Remy human hair, primarily sourced from Southern Brazil — the region the world recognises through Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima, and Alessandra Ambrosio. Brazilian hair is naturally fine, shines without coating, and behaves beautifully in humid weather. For specific densities and textures, we also source from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
“A well-made wig is the opposite of a costume. It is an object designed to be unnoticed.” — Clementine, Goldylost
04Cap construction
If you remember only one technical thing from this guide, remember that the cap matters more than the hair. The hair is what you see in the mirror. The cap is what you feel for fifteen hours a day. A well-built cap disappears within minutes of putting it on; a poor cap stays hot, heavy, and obvious until the moment you take it off.
Goldylost wigs are built on a hand-finished construction that combines three elements: a hand-tied lace front for an invisible hairline, a hand-tied top so the hair can move and part in any direction, and a wefted back for stability and breathability. The lace itself is true Swiss lace — the finest grade made — in a colour that disappears against most skin tones.
Below are three short videos that explain the construction better than text ever could.
What is a lace top wig?
What is a fully hand-tied cap wig?
Fully hand-tied vs traditional lace
The shorthand worth carrying away: hand-tied describes how the hair is attached to the cap (one strand at a time, by hand); lace describes the material of the front and top; Swiss describes the grade of that lace; glueless describes how the cap holds in place on your head.
05The Goldylost collections
Goldylost makes wigs in three distinct families, each built for a different way of wearing hair. The shared standards — 100% Remy human hair, hand-tied construction, glueless cap, finished in our Sydney atelier — are the same across all three. What differs is the shape of the cap and the way the back is built.
Classic collection — classic lace wigs
The classic lace wig is what most people picture when they imagine a premium wig. A hand-tied Swiss lace front melts into the skin at the hairline. A hand-tied top lets the hair part in any direction, so you can wear it on either side or down the middle of your head. A wefted back gives the cap its stability and breathability.
It is our most versatile family, and the right starting point for almost every first-time client. The classic cap suits short bobs and long, layered styles equally well, takes colour the way your own hair would, and reads as natural in every photograph we have ever taken of one.
The shared standards of the classic collection — hand-tied Swiss lace, glueless construction, finishing by Steve in our Sydney atelier — are the same standards we apply to every Goldylost wig. Within the family, the variation is in length, colour, and density rather than cap construction. If you are uncertain whether the classic family is the right starting point for you, it almost certainly is.
Pony wigs
The pony wig was designed for a specific request we kept hearing in consultations: women who wanted to wear their hair in a real, high ponytail — the way they used to with their own hair — but who couldn’t do it on a standard wig because the cap construction was wrong. A pony wig is built with a slightly snugger cap and a structured back, so the ponytail looks anatomically correct from every angle.
It is also the answer for women who simply prefer how a high ponytail looks. The cap holds its position through the day without giving away that the hair isn’t growing out of the scalp. We make pony wigs in the same Remy human hair as our classic collection, in the same length range, and finished in the same atelier.
One important note: because the cap is built snugger by design, do not size down on a pony wig even if two of your three measurements suggest a smaller size. If you are between sizes, order the larger or book a consultation with us first. The standard return policy applies as long as the piece arrives back to us unaltered.

Hat top wigs
The hat top wig is designed to be worn under a baseball cap, a beanie, or a sun hat — the cap or beanie itself becomes the hairline. It is the right choice for active wear, hot Australian summers, or for women who want a low-key way to leave the house without a full hairline reveal. The hat top is also our most relaxed price point and the most popular second piece for clients who already own a classic.
06Virgin hair limited collections
Once or twice a year, when our supply chain in Southern Brazil delivers a batch of hair that meets a different standard altogether, we make a small run of virgin hair wigs and toppers. Virgin hair is human hair that has never been processed in any way — never coloured, never permed, never chemically treated. It is gathered from a single donor, kept in a single ponytail through every step of the process, and arrives at our atelier in its absolutely natural state.
It is the most exclusive product line we make. It is also, by definition, not a permanent collection — virgin hair of this quality is genuinely difficult to source, and we will only put our name on it when the hair clears the bar. When a virgin hair piece is available on the site, it usually sells in days.
If you are interested in being notified the next time a virgin hair piece comes into stock, mention it in your consultation and we’ll add you to the short list.
07Density
Density is the technical term for how thick the hair is across the cap, expressed as a percentage. Mass-market wigs typically run at 150% to 180% density, which looks dramatic in a photograph but reads as “wig” on a real person within minutes of wear. Goldylost wigs run between 110% and 130%, which is the density of a healthy head of natural hair.
Density at a glance
| Density | What it reads as |
|---|---|
| 80%–100% | Light, fine hair — especially flattering on petite women |
| 110%–130% | Goldylost standard — natural, healthy density |
| 150%+ | Visibly full, often reads as a wig |
Most women look better with less density than they think. If you’re uncertain, we can talk it through in consultation — it is one of the most common reasons clients book a call.
08Length, color, and texture
These are the choices our clients find the most fun, and sometimes the most paralysing. The sequence we use in consultations is the same one we recommend at home: length first because it shapes everything, colour second because it has to live with the rest of you, texture last because human hair is forgiving enough to change with a heat tool whenever you like.
Length on a wig is measured from the crown to the tip at the back, in inches. Most of our clients land somewhere between fourteen and twenty-two inches — below the shoulder to mid-back — with the most popular order sitting at sixteen to eighteen. The rule we give every client: add one to two inches to your intended length when you order. You can always trim a wig shorter. You cannot make it longer.
Color is the variable our team is most asked to advise on. We offer subtle highlights, shadow roots, balayage, and full custom colour through our atelier. Dark roots and low lights typically run USD $220–$375 (AUD $300–$450), depending on the piece. Bang cuts run USD $50–$70 regardless of style.
Texture — straight, beach waves, soft curls — is the most fluid of the three, because every Goldylost wig can be heat-styled like your own hair. Choose what you live in most often and know that the others are a curling wand away.
09Fit and glueless wear
Every Goldylost wig is glueless. It holds in place with elastic at the nape, two Velcro adjustment tabs that give you about half an inch of room in either direction, silicone grip strips around the perimeter, and small combs at the temples and crown. No tape, no adhesive, no specialist tools.
Three measurements determine your cap size: circumference, front-to-nape, and ear-to-ear. The full measuring guide is in our cap sizing article. The standard we hold every order to is what we call the ten-minute test: a well-fitted wig is something you are aware of for the first ten minutes and have forgotten about by the time you finish your coffee. If a piece is still bothering you an hour in, something is off — usually fit, sometimes placement, sometimes just unfamiliarity. We help you diagnose it on the call.
For clients with very sensitive scalps, we can remove combs or clips and add silicone or PU strips to the ear tabs and nape. Ask in consultation if this applies to you.
10Care and lifespan
A human hair wig, like a piece of silk clothing, lasts roughly as long as the care you give it. The good news is that the routine is short. Brush gently before and after wear. Wash every eight to fifteen wears with a sulphate-free shampoo. Air-dry on a stand. Store on a stand, out of direct sun. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase if you sleep in it at all. That, more or less, is the whole regime.
Properly cared for, a Goldylost wig lasts between one and three years of regular wear. Rotation between two pieces approximately doubles the lifespan of each. Daily wear through hot weather, ocean swimming, or chlorine pools will shorten it. Once a year or so, our atelier offers a professional refresh — a deep wash, a re-tone of the colour, a re-cut where needed — that can extend the life of a beloved piece by another full year.
The complete care reference is in our wash and care article.
11Frequently asked questions
These are the questions we are asked most often. If yours isn’t here, send it to us — this section grows from real conversations.
Can I wear a wig every day? Yes. Most of our clients wear theirs daily for a year or more. A rotation of two pieces approximately doubles the lifespan of each.
Does wearing a wig damage the hair underneath? Not when the cap is correctly fitted and you wear a thin wig cap underneath to protect your own hair from friction.
Can I sleep in my wig? You can, but it shortens lifespan. If you must, sleep in a loose braid on a silk pillowcase.
Can I swim in my wig? Yes, with care. Saltwater and chlorine are hard on the hair; rinse, condition, and air-dry as soon as possible afterwards.
Can I colour my wig? Within limits. Toning down and shadow rooting are usually possible; lifting the colour significantly lighter is risky on pieces that have already been processed. Ask before you act — or send it to our atelier.
How long does a custom build take? Most Goldylost pieces are made in advance and stocked, so they ship within a few business days. New custom builds and made-to-order pieces take up to twelve weeks. Pre-orders — reserving a piece that is currently being made — usually take less.
Do you ship internationally? Yes, worldwide. About 60% of our online clients are in the United States, 30% in Australia, and the remaining 10% elsewhere.
What about returns? Contact us within three days of receiving your piece. If it’s unaltered, we will exchange it and cover the cost of the first exchange.
