Insurance Reimbursement
Insurance reimbursement for US customers
If you live in the United States and your hair loss is the result of a diagnosed medical condition such as alopecia areata, chemotherapy, or trichotillomania, some US health insurance plans may, depending on the specific terms of your policy, cover part of the cost of a cranial prosthesis.
Goldylost is a credentialed TRICARE provider (NPI 1205794377). On request, we can provide a medical invoice that contains the line items insurers commonly look for when reviewing a cranial-prosthesis claim. Providing this invoice does not constitute insurance advice and does not guarantee that your insurer will approve or pay your claim.
The information below is general educational content only. It is not insurance, medical, or legal advice. Goldylost does not file claims, communicate with insurers on your behalf, or determine eligibility. Whether your insurer approves, denies, or partially reimburses your claim is decided solely by your insurer, based on your individual policy. Goldylost is not responsible for any denial, reduction, delay, or outcome of your insurance claim. By using this information, you understand that the reimbursement process and the result are entirely your responsibility and the responsibility of your healthcare provider and your insurer.
TRICARE — a credentialed provider
TRICARE is the United States government health care program for uniformed service members, military retirees, reservists, National Guard members, and their families. If you or a family member is eligible for TRICARE benefits, the information in this part applies to you.
Goldylost is credentialed with TRICARE through Humana Military. Whether TRICARE will cover a cranial prosthesis in your individual case depends on your specific plan, your diagnosis, and the documentation your provider submits. To verify your eligibility and benefit details, contact TRICARE / Humana Military directly using the number on the back of your insurance card.
A general overview of the reimbursement process
The general framework below is informed by the process the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) publishes in its "5 Steps to Getting Your Wig Costs Reimbursed" guide. It is not specific to any insurer or any policy. Always confirm requirements directly with your own insurance plan before relying on any of the information below.
- The terminology insurers commonly look for. Insurers typically reference the medical term "cranial prosthesis" rather than "wig." Reviewing how your insurer describes coverage in your policy documents is a useful first step.
- Review your policy. Your insurer is the only source of accurate information about whether your specific plan covers a cranial prosthesis. Calling the member services number on the back of your card and asking about coverage under HCPCS code A9282, the documentation required, and any benefit caps is one way to do this. Keep your own record of the call, including the agent's name and reference number.
- Speak to your physician. Your physician (dermatologist, oncologist, primary care, or trichologist) is the source for the medical documentation insurers commonly require — typically a prescription for a cranial prosthesis and a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) confirming your diagnosis (with the ICD-10 code), the medical basis for the prosthesis, and your physician's NPI and signature. The wording and format of these documents are determined by your physician and your insurer's requirements, not by Goldylost.
- Request a medical invoice from Goldylost. Once your order is placed, email contact@goldylost.com to request an invoice that includes the term "cranial prosthesis", itemised pricing, our Tax ID and NPI 1205794377, the HCPCS code A9282, and the date of service. Providing this invoice does not constitute insurance advice and does not guarantee that your insurer will accept it.
- Filing and following up is your responsibility. Filing the claim, submitting any additional documents your insurer requests, responding to follow-up requests, appealing a denial, and managing the timeline are entirely your responsibility and the responsibility of your healthcare provider. Goldylost cannot file claims, speak to insurers on your behalf, or influence coverage decisions in any way.
HSA, FSA, Medicare, Medicaid and state coverage
Other reimbursement-related options some US customers explore include HSA / FSA accounts (cranial prostheses are commonly described as a qualifying medical expense when prescribed for a medical condition), Medicare and Medicaid (coverage varies by state, plan, and individual eligibility), and state coverage mandates (some US states have passed laws relating to insurance coverage for cranial prostheses). Whether any of these apply to you depends on your specific account, policy, or state of residence, and should be confirmed directly with the relevant administrator or your insurer.
What we provide — a medical invoice only
Goldylost is not an insurance broker, a healthcare provider, a billing service, or a legal advisor. We do not file claims, we do not communicate with insurers, we do not appeal denials, and we cannot influence coverage decisions. The only support we offer in the insurance reimbursement process is, on request, a medical invoice containing the line items listed above.
Include your order number and the name of your insurance provider in your email.
All information in this item is general educational content. It is not insurance, medical, billing, or legal advice. Coverage decisions, claim outcomes, payment amounts, and timing are determined entirely by your insurer and your healthcare provider. Goldylost makes no representation, warranty, or guarantee that your insurer will accept the documentation we provide, process your claim, or reimburse any amount. Goldylost is not liable for any denial, partial payment, delay, dispute, or other outcome of your insurance claim, regardless of cause. By using the information in this item, you accept that the insurance reimbursement process and any outcome of that process are entirely your responsibility and the responsibility of your healthcare provider and your insurer.
The general framework above is informed by the National Alopecia Areata Foundation's "5 Steps to Getting Your Wig Costs Reimbursed" guide.

01 — Private Health
Private health insurance for your hair loss solution
Did you know that private health funds can offer financial support for your medical hair wig? Conditions like Alopecia, Trichotillomania, or undergoing Chemotherapy may qualify.
The actual rebate amount can vary widely among different health funds and depends on your level of coverage. To get accurate information, we recommend reaching out to your private health fund directly to inquire about the rebate they offer.
02 — Tax Rebates
Tax rebates for medical wigs
You could qualify for an income tax rebate under ATO taxation ruling TR93/34 when purchasing your medical wig. According to this ruling:
Here's a breakdown of Ruling TR93/34
- This ruling clarifies what constitutes a 'medical or surgical appliance' as outlined in paragraph (f) of the 'medical expenses' definition in subsection 159P(4) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936.
- Section 159P permits a rebate for net medical expenses exceeding $1,000. Net medical expenses encompass payments for a 'medical or surgical appliance' recommended by a qualified medical practitioner.
For detailed guidance on how to claim your tax rebate, it's advisable to consult your accountant. Your financial well-being is our priority.
03 — Government Subsidies
State-by-state support across Australia
Several Australian states offer subsidies for medical wigs. Eligibility, amounts and processing times vary — here's a snapshot of what's available.
Enable NSW offers an A$1,600 subsidy for human hair wigs to approved applicants dealing with Alopecia. Supporting evidence, including a doctor's letter, is essential. Application process typically spans 3–6 months.
SWEP may offer financial support towards your human hair wig purchase. Visit SWEP VIC for a detailed understanding of the application process.
Financial assistance could be accessible for individuals with Alopecia, backed by a doctor's referral and holding a DHA Pensioner or healthcare card.
The Department for Families and Communities (DFC) equipment program extends wigs or contributes to their purchase for eligible applicants. Find application guidelines via Department of Health SA.
