A note from the atelier — on consultations

I need help to buy a wig or topper

Choosing your first premium piece can feel like a lot. That’s why every Goldylost client is invited to an unhurried consultation before ordering — included with every piece, no obligation, no pressure. Here’s exactly how it works, and why it makes the rest of the journey feel calm.

Goldylost wig and topper consultation with Clementine

Looking at wigs and toppers for the first time can be quietly overwhelming. Our website lists dozens of pieces, each with a different cap construction, density, lace type, length, and color. The terminology — lace front, hand-tied top, Remy hair, cap circumference — is unfamiliar to most women on first encounter, and the questions that follow are entirely reasonable. What is the right cap size for me? Will this color work with my skin tone? Which construction is most comfortable for daily wear? Can I sleep in it? Will it look like hair, or will it look like a wig? You’re not meant to know any of this on your own. That’s exactly why we offer unhurried, no-obligation consultations to every woman considering a Goldylost piece — before she orders, before she commits, before she even knows for certain that this is something she wants to do.

What a consultation actually is

A consultation is, simply, a conversation. Forty minutes to an hour, depending on how much we have to cover, with one of our specialists — often Clementine herself, or a senior team member trained directly by her. We talk through your situation: what brought you here, what you’ve tried before, what you wear day to day, what you’d like to feel when you look in the mirror at the end of all this. We answer the questions that have been keeping you up at night. We narrow the catalog from “hundreds of options” down to “two or three pieces that would genuinely suit you.”

There is no obligation to buy at the end. There is no pressure during. We’d far rather have an honest, thorough conversation with you and not sell you a thing that day than rush you into the wrong piece. A wig or topper at our level is a meaningful purchase — most pieces in our range sit between USD $1,500 and $4,000 — and the consultation exists so the decision is made calmly, with all the information.

Online, by message, or in studio — whichever suits you

Consultations are available three ways, and the right one is simply the one that fits your life and your comfort level.

Virtual, by video call. From the privacy of your own home, on your own sofa, with a cup of tea if you’d like. This is what most of our clients choose, and it works beautifully — we can see your hair, your skin tone, your natural color, and walk through pieces together on a shared screen.

By Facebook or Instagram message. If video feels like too much for a first conversation, you’re welcome to send us a message on Facebook or Instagram and we’ll respond there. You can ask your questions on your own schedule and read the answers at your own pace. Many clients begin here and graduate to a video call once they feel comfortable.

In person, at our boutiques. If you live near Sydney or South Florida, you’re welcome to come in. Our Chippendale studio in Sydney and our Doral boutique in Miami both offer private, unrushed appointments — no shop floor, no other clients, just you and us, with a full wall of pieces to see and feel.

Who you’ll be speaking with

Goldylost is a small, deliberately small, team. The person on the call with you is not a script-reading sales agent — they are someone who has spent years with these pieces in their hands. Depending on the day and the time you choose, you might meet:

Clementine, our founder, who started Goldylost after her own hair journey and has personally fitted thousands of women. Steve, who runs our Sydney studio and has the gentlest manner of anyone you’ll meet in this industry. Val, our Sydney specialist, who can match a color in three minutes flat. Linda, our Doral boutique manager. Jenny, Mery, or Maria, our senior consultants, all trained directly by Clementine. Whoever you speak with, the standard is the same.

How to prepare — just a few minutes

You don’t need to do anything to prepare. But if you’d like the call to move faster, three small things help.

Take a clip of your natural hair. If you have any of your own hair growing in, a small clip held to the camera tells us everything we need about color and tone.

Have a flexible measuring tape nearby. A soft tailor’s tape is ideal. We’ll walk you through three or four measurements together — circumference, front-to-nape, ear-to-ear — if it’s useful.

Save a few looks you love. Screenshots of women whose hair you admire, pieces from our site that caught your eye, even old photos of yourself. We use these as anchor points.

What happens after the consultation

Most clients leave the call with two or three specific pieces shortlisted. From there, the journey usually looks like this:

If the piece you want is in stock — in either of our boutiques or in our online inventory — we can typically dispatch within a few business days. Most Goldylost pieces are made in advance and stocked, so this is a common outcome.

If your piece is currently being made — we hold it for you and dispatch as soon as it’s finished. This is what we call a “your name on the next piece” pre-order, and it usually means a faster timeline than starting from scratch.

If you want a fully custom build — a specific length, density, color, or cap configuration that we don’t already have in production — we’ll start a new piece for you. New custom builds and made-to-order pieces take up to twelve weeks. We’ll tell you exactly which category your order falls into before you commit.

Why we don’t charge for the consultation

Buying a piece online, sight unseen, in the price range we work in, is a leap of trust we know feels significant. The consultation closes that gap. By the time you place an order, you’ll know exactly what’s coming, why we recommended it, and how to wear it on the very first day. Most clients tell us afterward that the conversation alone made the decision feel safe — well before the box ever arrived.

The consultation isn’t free in some marketing sense. It’s included in the way we run the business. The cost of every Goldylost piece accounts for the time we spend with our clients before, during, and after the order — because we don’t see those things as separate from the product. They are the product.

“We’d rather have an honest, unhurried conversation and not sell you a thing that day than rush you into the wrong piece.” — Clementine, Goldylost

Frequently asked questions

How long is a consultation? Forty minutes to an hour, depending on how much ground we have to cover. We’ll never end a call before your questions are answered.

Do I need a webcam? Helpful, not required. If you’d rather not be on camera, we can do an audio call, or move the conversation to messages.

Will you push me to buy something? No. If we don’t think we have the right piece for you that day, we’ll tell you. Sometimes we tell women to wait, to think, or to come back when something specific is in stock.

Can my partner or a friend join? Absolutely. Many clients bring someone along for support, and we welcome it. Wig and topper decisions are personal, and a second pair of eyes you trust can be a real comfort.

I’m losing hair from chemotherapy. Is this the right time to talk? Yes. We work with women through every stage of medical hair loss and we know how to make this conversation gentle. If now isn’t the right moment, we’ll be here when it is.

Do you offer in-person consultations outside Sydney and Miami? Not currently. Outside those two cities, the video consultation is our equivalent service — and most of our online clients find it works just as well.

How to book

Booking is simple. Visit our consultation booking page, choose a time that works for you from the calendar, and you’ll receive an email confirming the details and a link to join the call when the time arrives. The whole process takes under a minute.

If video isn’t your preferred format, you can reach us through our Facebook page or send a note via our contact form. We’ll respond within a day, usually faster, and we’ll meet you wherever you’re most comfortable.

A closing word

You don’t have to do this alone. The whole point of what we built is so that no woman would ever feel as lost in the wig-buying process as Clementine herself once did. Asking questions before you spend several thousand dollars is not a luxury — it’s the only sensible way to do this.

Whenever you’re ready, we’ll be here. Tomorrow, next month, next year. Every Goldylost order has started with a conversation, and yours is welcome to start with one too.
