What to Expect at Your Florida Fitting

Walking into a wig fitting can feel like a big step, especially the first one. Here's exactly what happens, so nothing is a surprise.

1. We talk first. Before you try on a single piece, we sit down and listen. What brought you here? How is your own hair behaving? What does this wig need to fit into — work, school run, a wedding, the beach, all of the above? Your answers shape everything that comes next.

2. We measure you. Cap size matters more than most women realize. We take three measurements — circumference, front-to-nape, ear-to-ear — to find the construction that will sit comfortably on your particular head shape.

3. We try on, together. We bring out three to five pieces based on what you've told us. We take photos for you (with permission) so you can step away, look back later, and decide without anyone watching over your shoulder.

4. We customize. The lace gets cut to your hairline. The part is moved to where you naturally part your hair. We can add a darker root, soften density at the front, or trim a fringe before you leave.

We use 100% Remy human hair, ethically sourced from Southern Brazil — the same region the world recognizes through models like Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima, and Alessandra Ambrosio. The Brazilian hair we source is fine, naturally shiny, and moves with the kind of swing that lets a wig disappear into your daily life.

We don't stop in Brazil. For specific textures and densities, we also source from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia — choosing each origin for what it does best. We travel for the right hair, because settling for whatever's easy to source is what makes most wigs feel like wigs.

What a Goldylost Piece Costs — and Why

Most online wig retailers don't talk about price openly until you reach the cart. We'd rather you knew before you booked. Most Goldylost wigs and toppers sit between $1,500 and $4,000 USD — smaller crown toppers at the lower end, full-coverage hand-tied wigs around the middle, custom and signature pieces higher.

Where does the money go? Into the hair (ethically sourced single-donor Remy costs many times what bulk processed hair costs), the cap construction (weeks of skilled labor on a fully hand-tied Swiss lace cap), the finishing (Steve hand-finishes every piece), and the fitting (a free 60-to-90-minute consultation, included for as long as you own it).

We are deliberately positioned as premium without the appointment-only price tag. Couture wig studios on either coast routinely charge $5,000 to $15,000 for what we make at our top end. Mass-market online retailers charge $200 to $800 for synthetic or low-grade human hair that won't last a year. Goldylost sits, intentionally, in the boutique-quality middle — real hair, real craft, real service, at a real price you can plan around. A well-cared-for piece typically lasts one to three years of daily wear, longer if rotated with another piece.

HSA, FSA, and Insurance — Funding Your Goldylost

The IRS recognizes a wig prescribed for medical hair loss as a deductible medical expense, and most HSA and FSA plans cover it as a "cranial prosthesis." A growing number of private insurance plans will reimburse part or all of the cost.

What your prescription needs to say. The wording matters. Ask your physician or oncologist to write the prescription for a "cranial prosthesis for the treatment of [your diagnosis]" rather than for "a wig." Plans that decline a wig will often approve a cranial prosthesis with the same paperwork. We can email you the wording your doctor's office can copy directly.

What we provide. An itemized invoice that uses the words "cranial prosthesis," includes the medical product code where applicable, and lists the diagnosis if you'd like us to. We will email it directly to your HSA or FSA administrator if you give us their contact details.

What's typically covered. HSA and FSA accounts in the United States routinely cover a cranial prosthesis at 100% with the right paperwork. Private insurance varies widely — some plans cover one wig per year, some cover one wig per diagnosis, some cover a fixed dollar amount, some don't cover wigs at all. We don't bill insurance directly, but we'll give you everything you need to make the claim.

Living with Your Wig in the Florida Climate

South Florida has its own particular requirements. The humidity is real. The sun is direct. The salt water and chlorine will eventually find your hair. Here is what we tell our local customers.

For humidity. Anti-frizz spray and a wide-tooth comb are your best friends. A silk or satin pillowcase at night extends the life of your wig considerably.

For the sun. Direct UV exposure will fade and dry the hair over time. A lightweight UV protection spray once a week is enough for most. If you wear your wig at the beach or pool, a soft sun hat is a beautiful second line of defense. Some sunscreens contain avobenzone or octocrylene, which can shift the color of blonde and gray hair — we recommend mineral sunscreens to anyone wearing a lighter shade.

For salt water and chlorine. Wear a synthetic piece for the beach if you go often, or rinse your wig with fresh water immediately after exposure. Salt and chlorine slowly degrade the cuticle of even Remy human hair, and we'd rather you save your premium Goldylost piece for the rest of your life.

For everyday wear. Wash every 10 to 20 wears with sulfate-free shampoo, condition the lengths only, and air dry on a wig stand. Full instructions in our Care Guide.

How long does a fitting take? Most first-time fittings run 60 to 90 minutes. Ask for a 90-minute slot if you'd like to try multiple pieces. Follow-up visits typically run 30 to 45 minutes.

Is the consultation really free, even if I don't buy? Yes. We don't charge for fittings, consultations, color matching, or follow-up appointments — in person or virtually.

Can someone come with me to the fitting? Absolutely. Many customers bring a partner, sister, daughter, or close friend. The fitting room is private and comfortable for two visitors.

I'm going through chemotherapy. Is the boutique a good place for me? It's a place built for you. Val and the team work regularly with women in active treatment, and we can adjust everything — the pace, the lighting, the way pieces are tried on — to what feels right on the day.

Do you take HSA, FSA, or insurance? We don't bill insurance directly, but we provide all the documentation you need to claim through HSA, FSA, or insurance reimbursement. See the section above.
